EURYNOMOS
Huge Outsider
Alignment: Always neutral evil
Environment: Gray Waste of Hades
Social organization: Solitary
-
"A monstrosity as tall as three men stands in front of you. Its enormous head resembles that of a cadaverous ram, and the creature is enveloped in a sort of cloak covering the rest of its body. Under this garment move eight insectoid legs, six of which it uses to move around, each ending in two slender fingers. But as it slowly approaches, what disturbs you the most are the numerous gaping maws covering its coat."

The eurynomos (plural: eurynomi) is a solitary, perpetually hungry entity haunting the colorless fields of Hades. It feeds mainly on apathetic souls and dead, living, or undead bodies that are unlucky enough to cross its path. These "Hades maws", as they are sometimes called, are almost 20ft high, and weigh around thirteen hundred pounds - which is surprisingly 'light' for their size. The eurynomi speak Abyssal and Infernal, in a drawling, whispering voice.

ENCOUNTER
The tactic of an eurynomos is simply to move towards its victim and engulf it. If its target seems to be able to fight, it uses its power of 'crushing despair' to make it vulnerable, before engaging contact. If this method seems ineffective, the eurynomos emits a 'cacophony', hoping to stun its victim enough to seize it in the next round. Finally, it generally uses its 'multiple jaws' attack to weaken an opponent before swallowing it, even if it seems defenseless.
.
- Cacophony
Three times a day, an eurynomos can utter a powerful howl using the numerous mouths that adorn its coat. Anyone within a 20m radius of the creature must pass a Fortitude test: a failure stuns the victims for several rounds, and causes them to suffer sonic damage. A successful test reduces this damage by half.
.
- Multiple maws
Any creature coming into contact with an eurynomos risks being bitten by one of the immense mouths that cover its body, although a successful Reflex saving throw avoid any damage. If the eurynomos grabs a creature that it cannot immediately swallow, it bites it violently with several jaws at once, causing multiple bludgeoning damage.
.
- Engulfment
If it successfully grabs a creature of Medium or smaller size, the eurynomos swallows it. Each round, the victim suffers acid damage, until it is completely dissolved by the monster's gastric juices. The imprisoned creature can attempt to free itself using a sharp weapon: if it success to do so, the wound immediately closes by itself, preventing another creature from exiting at the same time. An eurynomos regains life points for each creature it ingests in this way.
.
- Crushing despair:
The eurynomos is permanently surrounded by an aura of despair, characteristic of its native plane. Any creature within 10m of the monster must pass a Willpower saving throw: if it fails, it remains in a lethargic state for several rounds. A successful test makes the creature invulnerable to this eurynomos aura for 24 hours. This power is a mental ability.

ORCUS MAW
Large Outsider
Alignment: Always chaotic evil
Environment: Infinite Layers of the Abyss
Social organization: Solitary, couple, or pack (3 to 6)
-
There are eurynomi of lower rank with lesser powers, measuring only three meters tall and weighing two tons. Their engulfing ability only works on creatures of Small or smaller size, their cacophony is limited to one use per day within a 10m radius, their attacks and maws are less powerful, and they do not have the characteristic of crushing despair. These 'Orcus maws' generally travel in packs and devour everything in their path. Unlike the eurynomi, which are in sickening gray-green tones, the typical Orcus maws are in red tones.
This species actually comes from the research of Doresain, the Ghoul King, who experimented on eurynomi after becoming interested in their insatiable hunger. Following the seizure of his domain by the demon prince Yeenoghu, Doresain bargained with Orcus - another demon prince - for his support, and gave him the formula to create these monsters. Orcus, who at that time called himself Tenebrous, accepted the deal, but the exact ins and outs of this alliance are unknown. The kingdom of Doresain is still officially under Yeenoghu's control, but such has been the demon prince's neglect that Doresain has regained an almost complete control of his domain, apparently without any outside help. Several specimens of Orcus maws also fled during Yeenoghu's initial attack, and these creatures can be encountered in the Abyss, or surprisingly in other lower planes. Orcus maws understand Abyssal, but are unable to speak.
